50th Anniversary Party
Reply #26 on : Mon September 12, 2011, 07:38:51
Saturday, September 10th we hosted a 50th anniversary party for our Parents. It was a spectacular party. The dinner cruise was the perfect setting for an informal setting and plenty of socializing. The Captain and crew were amazing. It truly was the best party I have ever hosted or attended. Thank you so much for helping us make this a night we will remember for ever.

BREAKING NEWS

Belle of Topsail Ambushed in ICW Off Surf City.

The Belle of Topsail Charter Boat left the dock at the swing bridge in Surf City, NC at 6 PM for a planned Maiden Voyage (2011) with a full boat. This was a planned, usher-in-the-season, St Patrick’s Day cruise into the sunset, with both young and slightly older guests. The ship was full, and the spirits were flowing with many dressed in Irish green attire, hats and jewelry – some with specially polished green toenails.!!

As guests headed for the topside bar, for refreshments, Captain David Luther announced that we were passing through one of the last swinging bridges on the east coast. As we looked back at the bridge, some noticed that another ship, apparently lurking to the side, was slipping through the opened bridge, as well. Then the overtaking ship, black-trimmed in red, hoisted the dreaded skull and bones. The Belle shuddered, with increased speed, and took off, to try to outrun the pirate ship. Then the unthinkable in the year of our Lord, 2011, happened: The pirate ship fired upon the Belle. Terror reigned, and the bar tender poured libations faster and fater, to help fortify the passengers for what seemed imminent – an attack by scurrilous, crafty pirates on an unarmed pleasure ship.

Guests called upon St. Paddy to no avail. Slowly the smoke-obscured pirate ship pulled aside the Belle, which hove to, to avoid damage to the ship. With blood curdling cries, the pirates, armed to the teeth with swords and pistols, poured over the side on to the Belle. They demanded that the passengers give up their booty. They grabbed the cask of rum from the bar tender, and passed it from pirate to pirate. They eyed the women, who were wailing, or defiant, in turn.

In fact, one pirate was so delighted with the lovely ladies on board, , he pointed out to one of his pals, a toothsome young lady he’d like to take along, as they left. To assure her cooperation, one of the pirates grabbed her arm and pointed his pistol at her, while his mate made his way through the crowd. The pirate grabbed her hand, and, overcome with lust, pulled out a diamond ring he’d taken in an earlier heist. He begged her to marry him, and, altruistically, to help save the lives of the other passengers, she agreed.

Meanwhile, another passenger, while the pirate was distracted by holding the young lady, slipped his sword from its sheath, The golden sword caught the last rays of the sun, and the hilt was heavily encrusted with jewels of all hues, probably worth as much as the pirate ship itself. Hiding it deftly in her skirts, she spoke with some of the passengers, who quickly devised a plan to save the Belle.

A delegation of passengers, faced up to the pirates, saying the young lady had agreed to surrender her virtue to save them. Then the coup de grace: they had managed to disarm one of the pirate crew, stealing one of its prized treasures, as well. They demanded that the Belle, its crew and passengers be freed. The dumbfounded pirates, to save face, agreed to abandon the Belle, if their precious sword were returned to them. They agreed, too, to give the ship safe passage for the rest of her cruise. One by one they slunk back to their ship.

Meekly following in the Belle of Topsail’s wake, they hoisted a St. Patrick’s Day flag, and, while the relieved passengers rejoiced, made sure no other ship of dubious intent, intruded on the festivities of Belle’s party. The pirate, whose sword had been so skillfully stolen, he didn’t even know it was missing, was heard to mutter, “I shudda known. Everyone one knows you can’t trust those watermen from Sneads Ferry!
They're downright devious!"

My husband and I were recently married aboard the Belle and to put the amazing experience into words seems impossible. Captain David, Sharon and Cookie (our FAVORITE bartender!) made sure the day was fun, relaxing and beautiful. We had liberal access to the boat to set up/decorate, and were at liberty to do what we wished.

We initially were going to write our own vows, but Captain David's ceremony was SO touching and personal, we were glad in the end we didn't. The sunset was gorgeous and the entire atmosphere was friendly and laid back. He took care of providing the music (which was GREAT!) and the food - which was fantastic!! Everyone loved the fresh shrimp and the wings. We truly cannot say enough to thank the three of them. They even put up with our friends who visited Cookie a little too often!!

My husband and I recently went on the pirate cruise, and it was so fun! We had an absolute blast. The entire crew, and pirates where very entertaining, and so eager to assist you with whatever you needed. My husband and I will definitely be sailing again soon on the Belle of Topsail, and recommend that anyone who visits the Topsail area do the same. Great entertainment, and fun for all ages!!

The perfect wedding
Reply #20 on : Tue August 10, 2010, 17:00:05
For more than a week we have attempted to put into words our true feelings about our wedding on “the Belle of Topsail”. Although we are not sure we can do it justice, we are going to try. No words seem totally adequate to express our satisfaction, and sometimes, awe, regarding our wedding. Even early on in our “planning stage” of the wedding Captain David Luther, his beautiful wife, Sharon and “the bartender extraordinaire”, Ray, AKA, Kookie, put us completely at ease, and assured us of a wonderful, memorable, and unique wedding. They did not let us down for a moment. We, as well as, each of our quests had a fun, wonderful, and memorable evening as “we” became “one”. Every detail of our wedding and reception was attended to with elegance, style and consideration at a very affordable price. The decorations were absolutely perfect in every way. The ceremony performed by Captain Luther was touching, heartfelt and poignant. We could not have written our own vows that would have been any more fitting for the two of us. The reception was fun for everyone, including wonderful food, drinks, and music for the dancer in all of us. As it happened, the weather cooperated, but even if it hadn’t we had a built in “Plan B”. The wedding would have gone on as planned even in rain. From what I have heard, weddings are stressful. This one was nearly 100% stress free. They handled everything – every detail – from start to finish. We departed from the Surf City dock under sunny skies. The ceremony took place “under way” with an almost inaudible engine hum. We saw beautiful scenery from start to finish. Every one of our guests thanked us for including them on our guest list for our wedding cruise. If you are fortunate enough to be able to book a wedding cruise on the “Belle” we give you our personal guarantee that you will not be disappointed in any way. The Luther’s and crew will give their all to make your day as perfect as they did ours. We had not planned to have a photographer, but as fate would have it, we were blessed with an opening in Ron Canby’s schedule. He did a beautiful job of putting everything together. He was everywhere at once without disrupting the frivolity of the party. Thank you, Ron, for visual memories that could never be duplicated.

To Captain David, Sharon, and “Kookie”, many thanks to you for memories that bring a smile to my heart every time I re-live our Fairytale wedding in my mind.

Many hugs and much love,

Ray and Wendy English

David, Sharon and Cookie:
We all had an absolute ball on your famous BBQ cruise the other day! The Belle is THE Surf City attraction to partake of while visiting the area, or for a nice get-away for locals looking for something thoroughly enjoyable and different to do.
You have not seen the last of us for sure!
Thanks for your kind service and great hospitality.

We had so much fun on the sandbar cruise on 7/11, we've never done anything like that before. It's a do again for sure, David,Sharon,Ray & Kim were the best. They took care of every thing, we didn't want for anything. Although, I have to say some sunscreen on me would have been nice but I was too anxious to get in the water that my personal safety went down the ramp with me. We've been on the Belle a few times now and each time has been fabulous, it's relaxing and very scenic and hanging out in the water was the bomb. Thanks you guys for making so much fun.

Belle of Topsail reports hauntings

Haunted riverboat cruises set sail throughout October

The Belle of Topsail has quickly made a name for itself as the cruise ship that takes people out for lunch and dinner cruises along Topsail’s Intracoastal Waterway. After just two years of being docked in Surf City, many people are saying it’s haunted. That’s because it is!

Captain David Luther, and his wife Sharon, have decided to turn the traditional ship into a haunted Halloween boat for the rest of October. Several hundred ghosts, goblins, and various other monsters currently adorn virtually every inch of the ship that is now available for haunted cruises.

Sharon has displayed a collection of Halloween decorations that is so extensive and so state of the art, that just walking through the different levels of the boat activates all sorts of electronic witches and dead pirates that scream at you as you pass.

“I’ve had to use a lot of batteries. Turning in them on is easy. The problem is turning them off. They seem to want to stay on. Basically, we set it up in one day, because David is really fast. If I had my choice I’d keep adding on,” said Sharon, of the already heavily decorated boat.

Captain David Luther went on to describe what will be included and what can be expected with each Halloween-themed cruise.

“The Trick-or-Treat cruise is really for the kids. The 4 to 5 p.m. daylight cruise is $15 for adults and $10 for the kids [under 12 years of age, free for kids under 2 years of age]. It is a little haunted for the young kids. The other night, we had a bunch of kids that came on crying, but they got over it in about five minutes and we had a beautiful cruise and they had fun playing with everything,” said Luther.

The Belle will return from the one-hour trick-or-treat cruise and stay docked for thirty minutes before departing with the next group of cruisers.

“We’re calling it the Haunted Captain’s Sunset Party because we’ll start coming back in the last thirty minutes before dark, and we’ll turn everything on for the last thirty minutes so you’ll get the full effect of it.

And then we’re doing something brand new: we’re going to start doing the Haunted Riverboat Ride at 8 p.m. And we’re going to go down to the Surf City Canals… We’re going to do all that Thursday through Sunday,” said Captain Luther.

The night of October 30 is when Luther says they will have “the big one.” The entire dock will be turned into a haunted dock party for the adults.

“Last time we did it, we had almost 300 people. It was huge! The whole dock, all of us, are going to decorate our boats,” said Captain Luther. “All the slips will be full with big boats, and we’ll have the Tommy Black Band here on board and we’ll clear out a dance floor for everyone.”

The cover charge for the Haunted Dock is $5, with ages 21 and up allowed onto the Belle of Topsail. For reservations, more information on these events, or booking any private cruises, call the Captain at (910) 328-1621.

Pirates Invade Topsail

SURF CITY – Legend has it that in olden days pirates would lurk in the waters behind Topsail Island waiting to ambush passing merchant ships.

The pirates are back!

The pirates of today can be found chasing down and warring with the Belle of Topsail, an 1800s replica riverboat that provides cruises for passengers in the Intercoastal Waterway.

On Thursday, March 17, Captain David Luther and his wife, Admiral Sharon, took out the Belle for this year’s inaugural pirate cruise with a boat full of guests.

It was a warm and sunny that late afternoon and the sun sparkled on the water as the Belle made her way from Surf City south toward Topsail Beach.

The Belle had barely passed the Soundside Park when Capt. David announced that a pirate ship had been spotted and was gaining on the Belle!

*
Before too long a pirate galleon pulled up beside the Belle and shot black powder cannons at the boat.

Yelling threats and brandishing weapons, the pirates boarded the Belle when their captain brought his ship up next to the boat.

But this pirate invasion wasn’t typical, the pirates had a goal in mind.

“Ashley! Where’s Ashley?” bellowed one of the pirates before finding the woman he was looking for.

Ashley Shaffer, who was on spring break from Fairmont College in West Virginia visiting her boyfriend, was one of the passengers on the boat.

The pirates grabbed her and pulled her roughly to the side of the upper deck.

It was then that she realized that her boyfriend, Brandon Hipp, a US Marine originally from Appleton, WI  but stationed at Camp Lejeune, was one of the pirates.

In pirate garb and on bended knee, Hipp asked Shaffer to marry him.

She said yes.

Later, the couple explained how the event had taken place.

After boarding the boat, Hipp told Shaffer that he needed to use the bathroom but when he left her on the top deck of the Belle he ran down the dock and got on the pirate ship instead.

“After I had been gone a while I used my cell phone to text her to say I was still at the bathroom,” said Hipp.

Hipp’s friend Travis Mather, a fellow Marine originally from Orlando, FL  but also stationed at Camp Lejeune, was also aboard the Belle and videoed the whole event.

Capt. David said Hipp had contacted him about three weeks before the cruise and told him that he wanted to propose to his girlfriend on the boat.

Not one to let an opportunity pass, Capt. David arranged for the proposal to be memorable.

“It’s something that they will be telling their grandchildren about,” said Capt. David.

After the proposal, the Belle continued down the waterway and was harried by the pirates several more times.

The passengers on the Belle said they enjoyed the cruise and the pirates.

Adam Johnson, from Arizona, and his girlfriend Becka Bullard, from Oklahoma, were in the area visiting family when they decided to take a cruise on the Belle.

“It’s really nice, we love it,” said Bullard.

Johnson added that he thought the cruise would be fun for kids.

Another couple, David Buckhout, from Rochester, NY, and Caroline Cota, from Ohio, had just gotten engaged earlier in the week and said they had a great time on the cruise.

“It’s nice to see everything by boat,” said Cota.

Capt. David said much went into creating the pirate cruise.

For three years, the pirate re-enactor group Devil Men of Cape Fear, led by Capt. De’vil (William Hall), had been after him to do a pirate re-enactment.

“Last year I finally decided to give it a try,” said Capt. David.

The original pirate ship was a small chad boat, the takeover was scripted and the pirate troupe insisted on being authentic.

“We had a blast! It was off the wall fun,” said Capt. David.

The first pirate cruise had only booked at about 60-percent but the word quickly spread about the event.

“All the other shows were completely sold out,” said Captain David.

Looking to improve the experience, Capt. David said that when Hall told him that he knew of a skipjack boat for sale that could be turned into a pirate galleon, he jumped at the chance.

“It was an oyster boat up at the Chesapeake Bay,” said Capt. David.

Work began on it over the winter and by spring it had been reconstructed into a masted pirate’s galleon complete with cannons.

For this year’s season, Capt. David said there will be four pirate cruises a day – a more benign cruise for smaller kids; two wide open cruises complete with hands-on water cannon fights with the pirates and a trip to an island to find treasure; and an adult cruise with lot of ruckus.

“We have a lot of excitement and a lot of fun planned,” said Capt. David.

“There will also be a dinner cruise but I can’t guarantee that it will be pirate free,” he added.
